The almost last one

No more classes! It’s true; I took what is hopefully my last test this morning and have no more classes to attend. It’s bittersweet because I’m excited to be done with classes but will definitely miss my friends from the program.

I do have an assignment for strategic management and a presentation for project management. The presentation will be rough because we just got the requirements for it yesterday and have to present on Tuesday, but hopefully the professors will take this into account. Also, it’s a certificate course so all I really have to do is pass.

I start working full-time with Mitchell on the 14^th, so just days after graduation. I’m excited to get started because I’m finally getting the hang of things and think that I’ll be ready to actually contribute when I start full-time.

What I’m most excited about is finally getting some free time. I plan on reading, watching tv/movies, going to a baseball game and getting to play in my garden. It’ll be an adjustment not to have to spend all weekend parked in front of my computer working on homework, but a good one.

The One in which I'm excited

Hello All!  Two more weeks of class!!!

Clearly, I’m excited. If I said that I was ready to be done, that’d be an understatement. I’m done. [1] But before I’m truly done I still have:

-        A test in Enterprise Systems on Monday

-        A completed grant by the 29th

-        A group project in Enterprise Systems on the 30^th

-        An extra assignment in Strategic Management by May 3^rd

-        An exam in Strategic Management on May 4^th

-        A group project for Project Management on May 8^th

So maybe not so close. Anyway, for the fun stuff:

               -This week I got to go see a play with some friends at, you guessed it, theatresquared.[2] The play, Fall of the House, was definitely interesting and I enjoyed following the plot.

               - The red & white game happened, which means it’s time to start getting excited about Football![3]

               -I had time to take the dog for lots of walks! So at least he’s happy…my allergies less so.

               -The blog passed 1,000 views. I finally feel somewhat popular. 

               -I got my roommate, Kent, his birthday present. I’m super excited about it but I can’t tell you what I got until his birthday on the 25^th.

               -I went on an MP3 buying spree for my workout playlist. I got this song and now I can’t get it out of my head!

[1] It’s taking most of my effort to put forth 75-80% in classes right now. I do because I have a hard time doing anything less than my best. But at the same time, I’m just ready for some time off of the all-consuming nature of graduate school.

[3] Yes, that’s football with a capital F because that’s how big of deal it is here. 

The one in which I start counting down

               I’m writing to you on an extended break from studying for an enterprise systems test.[1] And, yes, this break involves cookies, milk, 30 Rock and blogging. And, yes, this break will most likely continue until I go to bed.

               So this week was my second week working at Mitchell and it’s still good. I have some outside reading that I need to do in my vast amounts of time but the more time I spend there the more I know that I’m going to enjoy it.

               I’m really, really, really close to finishing this grant up. I didn’t get much time to work on it this weekend, so I’ll have to carve some time out this week  for that.

               I want to congratulate my friend Ellen on her win at Governor’s Cup this week. If you guys remember, Ellen and I were on an entrepreneurship team together last semester. I didn’t continue on for some personal reasons but Ellen continued this semester, all by herself, and she’s doing fantastic!

               I ate too much this past week. I’m going have to spend some serious quality time with my elliptical trainer this coming week.

               All that’s left between me and graduation:

                              -3 weeks of class (and therefore 3 weeks of work)

                              -3 tests (two in Enterprise Systems and one in Strategic Management)

                              -1 group project

               So, this weekend I wasn’t feeling great and just kind of worn out from studying and such. About 15 minutes into my workout this song came on and made my Saturday a little bit brighter.

The one in which I work a lot

 Hello old friends,

Well it’s been another long week. I started working with Mitchell this week, so between class, work and more class I worked a solid 8 a.m. – 9 p.m. every day and then got to do homework. Still, working for Mitchell is going to be good and I’m glad that I can get some training out of the way before I start full-time after graduation.

This week’s highlights:

               -My team in Strategic Management won the challenge assignment. Every semester Dr. Anand surprises students with an extra assignment that is bit more challenging than our usual ones. This one involved coming up with a new business model for the circus industry. Anyway, my team looked at some other models out there and took the best bits from each and came up with a project that we really felt was exciting. Evidently, our professor and the judges thought so too. We get a boost in our participation grade and little reward like a small gift card to Starbucks. Mainly, it’s just exciting because we all thought we had a great project and it was nice to get confirmation of that.

               -Learning lots of fun things on IBM’s SPSS Modeler in Enterprise Systems. I do enjoy getting to play with data. I just hate having to wait for a model to load.

               -Just about there in Grant Writing. It’s odd because so much goes into to writing a grant but the output for this one will be less than ten-pages. I feel like I do a bunch of research to write one or two sentences.

               -Work at the library is chugging along. I’m painstakingly sorting out the InternationalBusiness Library Guide. You should check it out. I have a question to my international friends out there—what region of the world do I place Turkey in? It doesn’t really fit well into any region—Middle East, Central Asia, Eastern Europe?

               -Work at Mitchell is going to be good. Everybody is nice and excited to work there, which is always a good sign.

The One in which I get a Job

Hello all,
 I'm writing this to you from the past because I wanted to tell you all about my job but I didn't want to say  anything about it until the papers were signed, so this post has been saved on my desktop for the past three days. Hopefully, the future finds you well. 

I hope you guys had a good break because I sure did. I mean, sure, it rained and I had a take-home midterm to work on BUT I also got a job. Yep, I have a big girl job all lined up and it starts the Monday after graduation.[1]

So where is this job, you say? Why it’s at MitchellCommunications Group here in Fayetteville. I’ll be working in research, which is actually pretty perfect for me. Because as most of you know I like breaking down all things in to their little parts so I can better examine them.[2]

Outside of getting a job, I got to visit family and see my niece and nephew, which is always awesome. I also got to do some shopping and may (or may not) have bought 4 pairs of new shoes. It happens.

Classes are moving along. We had a big test in Strategic Management before Spring Break and I found out that score and I have safe B.[3] Enterprise Systems is fun and I’m gaining some more exposure to the different Business Intelligence softwares out there. Grant Writing is great! I love working with Life Styles and I’m really excited about the program that I’m writing a grant for. Finally, Project Management is an interesting course and I like the group I’m working with but I just wish it wasn’t so long. My Tuesday’s are soooo long with that 3-hour class from 6 to 9 pm.

More Music: In Honor of this Lovely Spring Day

The One in Which I Realize I'm Almost Done

               Well that was a packed week. At least it wasn’t one hour shorter.[1] I had a couple of assignments, work, a new class and a midterm. Let’s start with the new class, Project Management. I’m taking it through the global campus out in Rogers and it’s team-taught by 3 guys with a lot of project management experience, so it should be a good class. (The problem: it’s a three hour class on Tuesday, after I’ve been at class and work all day already and the room is cold.) The assignments weren’t bad but they didn’t leave me a lot of time to study for my test on Thursday.[2] Yep, I had a mid-term in Strategic Management and I either got a B or an F. I—and the rest  of the class—ran out of time  on the essay section, so I’m fairly certain I didn’t  get an  A. As horrible as that test was—and it was—the upside was the fact that it’s a mid-term, meaning I’m almost done with my last semester. Spring Break is next week and then it’s just a short six weeks to finals and seven to graduation. Except, I don’t have a job yet. But!  I’ve got an interview this week or next week (we haven’t finalized the day), so there’s at least a little progress. I’m really hoping I get this one because it’s a great organization to work for and there are plenty of opportunities from this position. I’ll tell you all about it when I find out the result. Until then, cross your fingers.

               This week, the week before a glorious spring break, doesn’t look to be any less packed.  No tests, but a group assignment and a couple individual assignments. The work for my grant writing class is really to increase in difficulty and importance[3] and I have to spend a lot of timing researching and writing for it. (However, because I love these things and the nonprofit I’m writing for—Life Styles—it’s pretty enjoyable.) Still, I put a lot of pressure on myself to be successful because I really want Life Styles to get a grant to do the work they need to do. I also have a professional development class on Project Management through Mitchell Communications’ Training Center—they do a lot of work the MBA program—and, most importantly, a haircut! It’s been three months and I have to wash and dry at night then sleep on it and then flat iron it to keep it from being an overly fluffy, shapeless mop.[4] I won’t even talk about my caterpillars eyebrows.

Fun Video

   I keep forgetting to post this embarrassing video of my friend Ellen and I after a show at TheatreSquared. In our defense, we were coerced into doing it. (We show up around minute 1.)

The One In Which I Go To The Airport (And Don't Leave)

   So, as I mentioned last week, I had a trip Chicago Tuesday and Wednesday to see the Walgreen’s format, visit the Saatchi & Saatchi X office and United’s headquarters. But we had some trouble getting out of Fort Smith on Tuesday and missed the new Walgreen’s format and, well, most of Tuesday. We didn’t make it to the hotel until 11:30 pm. At breakfast on Wednesday, we found out that our flight out had been moved up 30 minutes, which meant that we had to leave United earlier than planned, but when we got to the airport our flight  had been moved back. Basically, we spent the majority of the trip in airports and didn’t see much of Chicago.

    

   But it was fun to get to visit Saatchi and United. They were such different workplaces but you could tell that everyone was passionate about was their job. It’s always a little inspiring to get to see people working at something they love. And the weather was actually really nice, so I didn’t freeze, which is always a good thing. Anyway, my new picture is one I took at the hotel at 11:30 when we were checking in.

               On the agenda for this week:

·        My project management course starts on Tuesday. I’ll now have class and work until 9pm on Mondays and Tuesdays.

·        I have a phone interview on Wednesday, wish me luck!

·        I have a test Thursday morning in Strategic Management. A class that always makes me think of this SNL skit. 

·        It feels like spring. That means skirts and, of course, new shoes. I’m open to suggestions. 

Deep(ish) Thoughts

               For my returning readers, sorry I didn’t post last week. I was in the hospital with, hopefully, a freak thing that resulted from some scar tissue from a gallbladder removal almost two years ago.[1] I know, I know. I’m being vague but it was nothing serious and I’d just like to move on now.

               Interestingly enough, I had decided last week that my blog post would be slightly serious and discuss how this semester has been one of change and figuring out where I’m going. I’ve never been good at having a defined plan for myself, even when I’ve had months to think about it, and starting this semester by dropping out of  the entrepreneurship program, losing my internship (and potential job) and the women’s shelter partnership falling apart hasn’t really helped matters. Not that spending a week in a hospital bed helped either. It wasn’t really a contemplative stay; rather, it  was a sleepy-time stay. What I’m saying is that somewhere between classes, work, group projects and sleeping I’m going to have to figure out some things:

                              1) How intense of a job do I want? I like to work hard but do I want a job that consumes my whole day?  Or have to travel a lot?

                              2) Nonprofit or profit?

                              3) How many Reese’s peanut butter eggs are too many? Seriously, I love them and it’s that time of year.

               Anyway, next week’s post should be more interesting because I’m to Chicago on Tuesday and Wednesday to see United Airlines’ headquarter and the Chicago Saatchi & Saatchi X office!

               As I write this I’m finishing the second season of Ugly Betty[1], it’s been a busy week so I’m a bit slow in watching it. (There haven’t even been any Daily Shows on Hulu to distract me.) We have two group projects that have gotten rolling this week and there’s definitely enough work for my fifteen hours at the library. Other highlights from this week:

               1) Never thought I’d say this, ERP simulation is fun. As one of my group members said, “This is like Lemonade stand on crack.”[2]

               2) My roommate distracted me from strategic management by showing me a video about Superman comics. (Warning: Cursing and Sarcasm is involved.)

               3) DinaHowell spoke about her career experience. It was insightful and one of the better speakers we’ve had. (Though, to be honest, anyone who speaks for a less than an hour is a contender for that spot with us.)

               4) I’m getting my stuff together for my big trip to Chicago in a couple of weeks. I’m visiting United Airlines headquarters and the Saatchi & Saatchi office there. Because I’m not a huge pantsuit person but Chicago is cold in February, I got fleece-lined tights to go with my gray suit (that I just bought because black tights and black suit is too funeral-y).

               5) I get to see Tigers Be Still tomorrow at TheatreSquared. As always, it should be good.

               6) I just realized that’s it’s gotten harder to find rolls of SweetTarts. They aren’t in the Wal-Mart or Target checkout aisles and only a few convenience stores have them.  I can find the boxes of them, but that’s too many SweetTarts[3]. It’s cramping my style.

               7) It got cold. Is it spring yet?

It's February? Seriously?

               Well, another week down kiddos. I started my new internship at the library and I think I’m going to enjoy it. It looks like a lot of putting together resources for business students and analyzing how much current resources are used. Mainly, though, everybody at the library seems really cool and it’s going to be nice place to work.

               I also got work back rolling on our partnership with the women’s shelter. We’re finishing up our deliverable for the finance team and starting work on a fundraiser for the shelter. Graduate Women in Business is back, too. This semester we’re just concentrating on bringing some speakers and recruiting a new group of women for next year. GWIB’s been a real test of trying to find what works.

               Anyway, here’s a rundown for this week:

                              1) We’ve got the big ERP simulation competition this week. My team has been trying to work out our sale strategy, but, honestly, once the simulation gets going everything gets crazy.

                              2) Grant writing’s first assignment is due—60 pages of reading and a couple pages of writing. This is the easy one.

                              3) Dina Howell is coming to speak on Thursday. It’s a lunch and learn, hopefully we’ll have Qdoba…(They always get Qdoba for the big speakers.)

                              4) I’ve been re-watching Ugly Betty. The US version and I found the original Columbian version, Yo Soy Betty, la fea, subtitled in Spanish[1] online. I’d forgotten how awkward the comedy was on these shows. It’s almost unbearable sometimes. (I have the same trouble with 30 Rock. I thinks it's because I do the same things as Liz and Betty sometimes.)

                              5) I get to go to Chicago on the 28^th and 29^th to visit United Airlines headquarters and Saatchi & Saatchi offices. Hopefully, the unusually warm weather persists.

Yup, still posting!

               Has it been a week?[1] Anyway, I’ve been busy applying for jobs and going to class. I’ve applied to a couple of sales analyst positions in the area, associate spots at a couple of management consulting firms[2] and the MBA-specific programs at Sony and L’Oréal. There’s an internship in Dublin this summer that I’m considering applying. It seems like a great opportunity but, to be honest, I worry a little about how expensive it will be to live there. The application is due this week, though, so I have to decide fast!

               Classes have been good. We’re doing an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) simulation in my Enterprise Resource class and the software reminds me so much of how software used to look back in the day.[3] Still, the simulation is a good, interactive way to get experience with ERP. (Not that I would necessarily want to do ERP, but you get me.) This coming week I’ve got a bunch of meetings to bring the new students in on Graduate Women in Business and the Women’s Shelter project. I’m really trying to get something accomplished with both of these but I’m getting a little stressed about running out of time.

               On the good news front: 1) I found my old copy of Age of the Empires II, so I’ve been nerding out on that; and 2) I’m going to be working this semester for the Business Librarian and will hopefully get to make book-forts.[4]

Miss me?

               Well kids, I’m back. It’s been a bittersweet break for me. On the upside: I have an adorable new nephew (those are my parents and niece pictured with him), got my chairs repainted and some more house decorating done and got a brand new sewing machine for Christmas. I also made a couple of scarves, one for my roommate and one for my friend Thomas,[1] and read a couple of books.[2]

               On the downside: I am no longer doing the entrepreneurship project and the offices for my internship have been relocated and so I have no internship.  It’s like being back at square one with no plans and no fallback, right now. I’m just applying at everything that seems interesting or I think will get my resume in front of a company; circulating my resume and stalking company websites for jobs. However, it is exciting because I really have no idea where I’ll end up now.

               Classes this semester are shaping up to be interesting. I have strategic management, enterprise systems and grant writing for the social sciences. Strategic management will definitely be very useful and enterprise system should also be eye-opening because I don’t have a lot of experience with ERP. Grant Writing will, hopefully, open the door to some freelance opportunities and it’s also part of the Cross-Sector Certification program. If I get a job in Fayetteville, then I might be able to complete that certification, which would open up some opportunities in the public sector for me.

I'll Put Something Good Here...Someday

So class is officially done. All I have left is studying for my accounting and investment finals and finding Christmas presents for people. The trouble with being swamped with class and work is that you wind up buying all your Christmas presents the week before Christmas. But! I’m am swamped no longer and in a couple days I get to spend a whole month reading, watching movies and playing with my new sewing machine.[1]

               Here’s the short list of books and movies that I’m going to take out over break:

               -Neal Stephenson’s Reamde

               -The most recent season of Doctor Who

               -The new Pedro Almodovar movie

               -And a John Le Carre book

               This weekend I got to go shopping with my mom. We ate some Qdoba and I spent too much at Sephora.[2] I also went and saw It’s a Wonderful Life at TheatreSquared with some friends. It was an impressive production. There were only few people to play all the parts and the set was perfect for it. Today, I studied some, cleaned some and watched La Femme Nikita with Thomas.[3] This will pretty much be break, other than the studying part.

               Anyway, I hope you guys all have great holiday plans. I’ll try to blog over break, though I can’t promise it won’t be really boring…

1 Week!!!!

Hello again, I bet you missed me last week. (And, of course, by missed I mean spending your time doing fun stuff with your family and eating too much.)

               Good news: My entrepreneurship team—Boston Mountain  Biotech—got  into a business  plan competition at the Ivey Business School in Ontario, Canada. Two other UA teams got into the competition also so it looks like we’ll be booking the whole plane.

               Double Good News: 1 week of class left!!!! Things left to do[1]:

                              1) Final edits on my Community Development paper (Due Monday)

                              2) Revisions on business plan (Due Tuesday)

                              3) Leadership final (On Wednesday)

                              4) Investments presentation (On Thursday) 

                              5) Entrepreneurship presentation (On Thursday)[2]

                              6) Work. (Always awesome!)

               I’m looking forward to Winter Break so I can see my family and take a break(ish). I say “ish” because I’ll be working on the business plan, repainting 2 dining chairs and trying to clean the house.[3] Don’t worry, though; I’ll be blogging away about repainting chairs and reading books!
               Following up on my last post, I have finished the four seasons of Burn Notice on Netflix. I plan on watching the fifth over break, along with the sixth of Doctor Who. In the meantime, I've been catching up on episodes of The Next Iron Chef: Superstars and Nikita. (Nikita seemed a logical progression from Burn Notice.) I know you love hearing about my TV watching habits.

Dt.Cokes and Rice Krispie Treats: or How I Get Things Accomplished

     First draft of the business plan is done—well minus financials but that’s not my area so I can’t really do those—and all it took was 1.75 seasons of Burn Notice and half of a box of Rice Krispie treats.[1] Though to be honest the work is just beginning, because now we’ve hit the stage  where it’s about fixing the weak spots in our plan and the problem with that is that about the time you get one weak spot solved  five more pop up. We’ll get there; we’ve got a great team.

   In other news, it’s finally scarf weather and you know what that means? It’s time for me to crochet some scarves. I bought some yarn, pictured right, the other day. It’s nice, soft wool yarn, which is perfect for scarves. I plan on making a one for me with each color, but I bought extra to make some for friends and family.[2] I’ll try to post some pictures of the finished project.

   Guess what? Two days of class/work this week! (That’s all I really have. I’m just really ready for Thanksgiving break and a couple of days off with my family.) After the long week that was last week—btw, I passed everything—it’s just time for some days off.

   In GWIB news, we’re having a Tacky Sweater party. If you’re a prospective student, MMBA or alumni, we’d love to have you. It’ll be Dec. 9^th from 7:30-9:30 at Grub’s. Tacky Sweaters are must. (Though, we’ll loosely interpret tacky.)

[1] I don’t think I’ve mentioned this but I love Burn Notice, probably as much as I love Doctor Who. Obviously, I have a thing for quirky group dramas that involve solving a problem—one with power tools, duct tape and cell phones and the other with a sonic screwdriver.

[2] Hopefully by now you’ve figured out that I like projects, especially projects that involve making or fixing things. This also seems to explain my love of the shows mentioned above.  

[3] My mom once told me that. Then my friends and I joked that if you graphed “be good” and “have fun” using a Venn Diagram the circles wouldn’t intersect on a 3-D plane, which involves my friends and I circling our arms out to the side like the bunch of nerds we obviously are. (Oddly enough, this also seems to explain my love of the TV shows mentioned above.)

I'm Still Working on It...

So this week…two super awesome things: 1) we filed as an LLC. I am officially CEO of Boston Mountain Biotech[1]; and 2) I chopped my hair. The first is a really big deal and the second…not so much, but only because I do that every couple of years. (No really, I’m one of those girls who’s always growing her out, wearing it long for 6-12 months and then chopping it off and starting the process all over again.) I’ve included a picture of my hair but not of the filing b/c we did it while sitting around my kitchen table eating pizza. We’ll pull a reality TV and restage it at a later date when everyone looks more official.

Anyway, other sundry items[2]:

-The partnership with the women’s shelter is going well. We had two meetings this week to discuss ideas for 1) helping them on the long-range financial planning side—basically we are going to use our “expertise” to help interview and vet financial planners for them; and 2) planning some sort of fundraiser and how to provide some marketing “expertise” for their thrift store. [3]

- Almost done with classes. This next week of classes is going to be long—2 tests, 2 assignments, 1 paper and 1 presentation—but after that it’s all downhill.

-Speaking of winter break have you seen the reading list? I need suggestions. 

-I learned an important lesson this week: Be careful when watching the most recent season (6) of Doctor Who…because those episodes have some creepy aliens! I was home alone after 5 pm, so every light in the house was on and I had to do checks of the house.

-I only have three classes next semester. (Granted, I have business plan competitions and job-hunting, but let’s focus on the positive.)

-I need to karaoke. That’ll be happening in the next month or so.

Alright, well I had a really good analogy for the analogy of the week, but then I forgot it—probably to make space for something important—so I’ll try to get you two next week. Or I’ll just dispense with the whole “analogy of the week” bit, either way.
